Taquile is, without a doubt, one of the most magical locations we’ve ever filmed in. There’s something about it that’s almost hard to explain. It’s mesmerizing, breathtaking… and incredibly still.

From the moment you arrive, sailing across Lake Titicaca, you feel it. The pace shifts. The noise disappears. As you walk up toward the village, locals welcome you with muña leaves (a gesture that helps you breathe, adjust, and take it all in).

Time moves differently here. And without even noticing, you start moving with it.

We’ve filmed commercials in Taquile that needed more than just a beautiful backdrop. Something human, something real. And that’s what this place gives you. It holds the story in a very quiet, powerful way.

We’ve seen stories unfold here in a very natural way. A character arrives searching for something, and little by little, something shifts. The mountains don’t just sit in the background, they hold that journey.

Paracas always surprises us.

And as you keep driving up, the landscape opens into mountains, lagoons and lots of llamas and vicuñas.

1. Los permisos son importantes (y toman tiempo)

Filmar en Perú no es una experiencia de “grabo primero, pregunto después”.
Desde parques nacionales hasta sitios arqueológicos como Machu Picchu, y espacios urbanos, muchas áreas requieren permisos oficiales. Los tiempos de gestión varían según el lugar y las entidades gubernamentales involucradas. 2. La geografía es un regalo… y un desafío

Barranco, en cambio, es donde tu personaje puede explorarse a través del color. La influencia colonial republicana se mezcla con la extravagancia latina: Barranco es un distrito bohemio y rústico, con influencias arquitectónicas multiculturales. Evoca el estilo de una película de Sean Baker —colores arcoíris, abandono infantil. Barranco, la joya multicolor en la corona limeña, es ideal si quieres que tu película tenga todos los colores del arcoíris.

Y por último, Callao. ¿Tu personaje busca un final crudo en los muelles… como Terry Malloy en On the Waterfront? If it sounds perfect, that’s because it is. Lima is the world’s third largest desert city, located within spitting distance of the Pacific Ocean. As a filmmaker, Lima offers a surreal, unique mix – one where you can move from sleek, modern apartments into a gritty, historic ports in one take.

Peru is a country of extreme multiversity, from desert to rivers and rainforest, so it makes sense that the capital city personifies that diversity. These multitudes are the reason Lima is such an exciting location to film in. The city of Lima is split into many different districts, such as Barranco, Miraflores, and Callao. Let’s explore them through the lens of filmmaking:

Miraflores offers classy skyline views and one-tone architecture. The district is home to beautiful palm trees and polished, concrete streets. It’s the place to go if your character is anything like Tony Montana from Scarface and wants to smoke idly whilst rolling through Miami-style streets in a 1963 Cadillac.

Barranco,  in contrast, is where your character can explore themselves through the medium of colour. Republican, colonial influence meets Latin extravagance, the district of Barranco is a rustic, bohemian district with multicultural architectural influences. Barranco is reminiscent most of a Sean Baker film, adolescent rainbow colours, childish abandon. The multicoloured jewel in Lima’s crown, Barranco is the place to explore if you want your film to feature every colour of the rainbow.

Finally, Callao. Does your character want a gritty, dockland end… like Terry Malloy did, in On The Waterfront?  Callao is known for its maritime port, as well as island regions such as La Punta, a peninsula home to three beaches. Whether it’s a sandy showdown or a noir dockland conclusion your character seeks, Callao is the place.

Nombres que evocan imágenes míticas de dunas doradas, camellos y vistas panorámicas épicas. Los paisajes desérticos tienen una mística especial en el cine, con títulos famosos como Lawrence of Arabia and Raiders of the Lost Ark, filmados en las arenas de Jordania, Marruecos y Túnez. Más recientemente, Dune: Part Two, protagonizada por Timothée Chalamet y Zendaya, que se rodó en gran parte en Wadi Rum, un sitio Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO ubicado en el sur de Jordania. Wadi Rum es, sin duda, una de las reservas naturales más celebradas en el cine: películas como Theeb, el primer largometraje jordano nominado a un BAFTA en 2016, se han filmado allí, además de grandes superproducciones como The Martian y Aladdin.

Pero hay otro Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO del que quizás no hayas oído hablar y que es igual de mítico que Wadi Rum: la reserva natural de Paracas, en Ica, al sur de Perú. Hermosamente inexplorada, acariciada por el calor, y con apenas dos largometrajes filmados allí.
Paracas sigue siendo una joya escondida, un título impresionante extraño en esta era del internet, del descubrimiento obsesivo y del e-turismo.

He estado en Paracas muchas veces, pero cada vez se siente como la primera. El paisaje es tan silencioso que no escuchas nada más que  tu propio aliento. Todo lo que existe son extensiones de arena angelical, costa escarpada, océano ondulante y cielo azul. Conducir cinco minutos y la arena desaparece: solo queda el mar. Cinco minutos más en bote, y se observa una gran diversidad de vida silvestre. La belleza de Paracas (y de Perú, en general) radica en su diversidad, en la amplitud de sus paisajes, lo que lo hace completamente distinto a cualquier país que hayas visitado. Incluso en las secciones desérticas más profundas de la reserva de Paracas, hay lagunas rosadas, costas abruptas, botes que se deslizan sobre un mar azul oscuro perfecto. Puedes navegar entre las islas y observar leones marinos y pingüinos.

Cada vez que piso Paracas experimento un asombro nuevo, punzante, casi incrédulo. ¿Cómo es posible que aún no se haya hecho una gran película en Paracas? ¿Cómo es humanamente posible que un paisaje tan diverso, tan diferente, tan rico, haya sido ignorado por la pantalla? Si Wadi Rum ha sido inmortalizado por su arena roja y su roca arenisca, ¿cómo es que Paracas aún no ha sido grabado en la historia del cine por su granodiorita rosada, sus limolitas, sus vastas formaciones rocosas paleozoicas?

Quizás Paracas siga inexplorado en el cine porque es un secreto bien guardado: no hay suficientes personas en los lugares adecuados que sepan de su existencia, y quizás quienes sí lo saben, lo consideran inaccesible. No sorprende que los cineastas prefieran paisajes familiares como Wadi Rum, donde el camino ya ha sido recorrido cien veces y los permisos obtenidos otras tantas.

Pero, ¿qué es el cine sin riesgo?

¿No queremos más? ¿No es el punto de hacer arte el ser diverso, intrépido, aventurero? ¿Explorar?

Está por verse si Paracas recibirá su reconocimiento; si algún cineasta medio ciego, pero decidido, con un gran presupuesto y un poderoso campo de influencia, vendrá a Ica y grabará el nombre de Paracas en la historia del cine. Tal vez este artículo empuje a alguien en la dirección correcta. Beautifully undiscovered, kissed with heat, with a track of only two motion pictures being filmed there (Source: IMDB), Paracas remains a hidden gem, an impressive title in the age of the internet, of obsessive discovery and e-tourism.

I have been to Paracas many times, but each time is like the first. The landscape is so quiet, you can hear nothing but your own laboured exhales. How is it humanly possible that a landscape so diverse, so different, so rich, could be neglected on the screen? If Wadi Rum has been immortalised for its red sand and sandstone rock, how has Paracas not yet been locked into film history for its siltstone, pink ink granodiorite, swathes of ancient, Palaeozoic rock?

It may be the case that Paracas remains unexplored on film because it is a well-kept secret: not enough people in the right places know it exists, and perhaps the ones that do believe it to be inaccessible. It’s no surprise that filmmakers prefer familiar landscapes like Wadi Rum, where the path is well-trodden and the permits have been obtained a hundred times before.

But what’s film without risk?

Don’t we want more? Isn’t the point of making art to be diverse, unwavering, adventurous? To explore?

It remains to be seen whether Paracas will receive its flowers; whether some half-blind, determined filmmaker with a big budget and magnetic sphere of influence will come to Ica and burn Paracas into cinematic history, but perhaps this article will push someone into the right direction.
